AYROC's next Orienteering event will be at Knockshinnoch, New Cumnock on 29th June 2024 at 11.00am.

Knockshinnoch Wildlife Reserve is a reclaimed colliery site on the outskirts of New Cumnock, managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. The map has only been used once before in 2022. The area is predominately a young birch wood with small open gravel areas and some undergrowth. The usual leg cover and whistle are recommended. Dogs on leads only.

Courses; Yellow (1.4km), Orange (2.5km), Green (4.6km).

The cost will be £5 per adult, £2 per junior, strictly cash on the day, exact change only. Pre entry only by filling in the form, see below.

New Cumnock is on the A75 and on the Glasgow to Dumfries railway. New Cumnock is served by various buses between Ayr, Cumnock, Dalmellington and Dumfries; see Traveline Scotland.

There are no public toilets in New Cumnock. Toilets are available next to the Post Office in Kirkconnel and at Dumfries House main car park , the bus station and the Aldi supermarket in Cumnock.

The car park in the middle of New Cumnock is located at post code KA18 4AR, Grid Reference NS618136, Lat/Long 55.397384 -4.1830831, what3words finer.tribes.grape . The Reserve entrance we are using for Registration is at Grid Reference NS613130 .

Please park in the centre of New Cumnock and walk from there to Assembly/Registration. There are car parks at the railway station, behind the Post Office, at the swimming pool and between the church and the supermarket. There is a small bakery and coffee shop at the north end of the main street. The route to Registration is a 10 minute walk on the pavement from the South West corner of town (by the mini roundabout) on the B741 Dalmellington road.

Registration/Assembly/Download/First Aid will be at a single vehicle parked by the gate to the Reserve. Spare clothing, keys and so on can be left at Registration.

The map will be at 1 to 5000 with north lines printed 150m apart. NOTE: a lot of the rough open ground is runnable coal shale without any vegetation on it; it is often small flat stones. Vegetation density is estimated in late Spring. Peak vegetation cover will be in late Summer.

The area is heavily used by the locals on foot and bicycle. Please give way to non competitors at all times.
