Maprun training and practise session in Dalry Park on Saturday 17th October 2026 at 11.00am

Maprun is a way of using a personal smartphone as a race timing device instead of putting timing equipment on O control flags out on the ground. You can see some information about Maprun on here

https://maprunners.weebly.com/

Dalry Public Park is a small community facility which has playing fields, a  a playpark, river, a bowling green, many paths and a small area of woodland. The technical difficulty is light green

The map scale is 1:4000.

Registration will be in a car with a sign in the Car Park.

There is a cafe in Dalry, The Penny Farthing. There are no toilets available on site but the local Lidl has a customer toilet.

Orienteers take part at their own risk. A risk assessment will have been carried out however the following should be noted. Care should be taken underfoot as there are uneven paths and there could be mud in places. Dalry Public Park is popular so there will be many other users and consideration should be given to them, including dog walkers. First Aid will be available from one of AYROC's members who has First Aid training.

For those interested in improving their Orienteering skills, there will be instruction available 30mins before the start. Please specify on the form if you wish to take part in this.

The cost of this activity is £3 per person and £6 per family.

The closing date for entry, in order to print sufficient maps, is Thursday 15th October 2026 at 10.30pm.

If you want to try Maprun you will need a smart phone with the Maprun app installed and your account details filled in. Note that there is a potential for your details to be publicly displayed by the Maprun company, so it is OK to use an alias if you want to.

We will be using paper maps in the usual way, but there will not be Controls out on the ground. The Dalry Park is fairly easy navigation but the absence of physical Controls will focus your attention on the best practise of navigating to the feature and not to the Control flag.

We will start with a simple line course and follow with a simple Score course. If this appeals to you please fill in the booking form in the usual way except that you should write "maprun" instead of you dibber number.

Once you have installed the Maprun app on your phone read through this page and follow the tips;

https://maprunners.weebly.com/phone-settings.html

If using Maprun doesn't appeal you are welcome to come along anyway and try the planned courses for the training value. We will set up Start and Finish controls but, again, you will be navigating to the feature and not to a Control flag. Please fill in the booking form in the usual way, entering either your personal dibber number or "loan".

If you feel that you are still a novice at Orienteering please feel free to come along and we can offer some personal instruction.
