The
22nd Orienteering Schools’ Championships, held at Beach Park Irvine on
Wednesday 9th June, challenged the orienteering skills of two
hundred and twenty young competitors from seventeen Ayrshire schools.
Gargieston
Primary mastered the difficulties and secured all the Primary Team Trophies. Monkton Primary made an impressive entry to
their first Championship taking third place in P4/5 girls and winning the Dolphin
House Trophy for the highest scoring small school. Club members were to the fore in the
individual medals with gold for Tom Nichol and silver for Fergus and Kirsty
Smith.
Five
secondary schools participated. Grange
Academy, for the second year, came out in large numbers, and dominated the Team
Awards. AYROC members Andrew Nichol and Lindsay
Smith won gold medals in the individual category.
The
excellent sporting behaviour of the pupils was noted; all kites remained
unscathed with no vandal proof assistance. A very successful day was concluded with the
presentation of prizes by invited guest, Hilary Quick.
